Purulia, 15 September (H.S.): Police on Tuesday recreated the alleged murder of a young woman at a mess in Purulia, taking her boyfriend, Amit Kumar Mahato, to the crime scene. Mahato was arrested after he was allegedly caught while transporting the victim’s body in a sack on his motorcycle to dispose of it at another location.
Investigators took Mahato to the mess to establish how he allegedly killed the woman and subsequently packed her body in a sack before attempting to transport it on his motorcycle. The reconstruction was conducted in the presence of Purulia district police DSP (Headquarters) Nirmal Das, the officer-in-charge of Balarampur Police Station, the officer-in-charge of Tamna Police Station and other police officials.
Mahato did not respond to questions from journalists while being taken from the police station to the mess. On the same day, a forensic team from Durgapur also visited the mess and collected various samples from the room as part of the investigation.
According to police sources, Mahato and the woman were staying at two separate messes in Purulia. Both were residents of the Baghmundi police station area of Purulia district and had reportedly been in a relationship for around four years. The woman was undergoing nursing training.
Police said Mahato had called his girlfriend to his mess on Saturday afternoon. It is not yet clear what transpired between the two. Investigators, however, suspect that Mahato allegedly slit her throat inside the room before placing her bloodied body in a sack.
Later that night, while allegedly attempting to dispose of the body, Mahato was intercepted and arrested by personnel of Balarampur Police Station. He was caught around 30 kilometres from Purulia town and subsequently taken to the police station. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The police are now investigating the circumstances leading to the murder, the motive behind the alleged crime and the sequence of events following the killing.
