New Delhi, 15 September (H.S.):

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his greetings to the people on the occasion of Samvatsari, the sacred festival of Jainism. On the occasion, he called upon people to make love, harmony, compassion and goodwill the foundation of their lives.

The Prime Minister shared a Sanskrit verse on the social media platform X and wrote, “सहृदयं सांमनस्यमविद्वेषं कृणोमि वः। अन्यो अन्यमभि हर्यत वत्सं जातमिवाघ्न्या॥” Explaining its essence, PM Modi said people should engage in actions that foster love, amity and harmony in their hearts. He said everyone should have the same affection and sense of kinship towards one another as a cow has for its newborn calf.

Extending his heartfelt greetings to the people on Samvatsari, the Prime Minister said the sacred occasion reminds us that forgiveness and compassion strengthen every relationship. He said humility should guide people on the occasion of Samvatsari, while kindness and goodwill should serve as the foundation of every action. The Prime Minister concluded his message with the well-known Jain expression of seeking forgiveness, “Micchami Dukkadam”.

It may be noted that Samvatsari is one of the major and sacred festivals of Jainism and is primarily observed as a day dedicated to forgiveness, self-purification and repentance. It marks the concluding day of the Paryushan Mahaparva.
