Thiruvananthapuram, 15 September (H.S): Kerala is expected to receive heavy rain over the next two days, with yellow alerts issued in several districts amid warnings of thunderstorms, strong winds and rough sea conditions.

Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts have been placed under a yellow alert on Tuesday because of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. The alert will remain in force in Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall is classified as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official safety instructions.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely during the period. Strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour may affect parts of the state. People have been urged to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, secure loose objects around buildings and exercise caution while travelling.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has warned of high waves along parts of the Kerala coast due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon.

Waves measuring between 0.7 metres and 1.1 metres are likely until 11.30 pm on Wednesday along the coastal stretches of Thiruvananthapuram, from Kappil to Pozhiyoor; Kollam, from Alappad to Edava; Kozhikode, from Chombala to Ramanattukara; and Kannur, from Valapattanam to New Mahe.

The phenomenon could trigger seawater surges and coastal flooding in low-lying areas. Fishermen, coastal residents and tourists have been advised to stay away from beaches and avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period.

Authorities have asked people living close to the shoreline to remain alert, move fishing equipment to safer locations and follow instructions issued by the district administration and disaster management agencies.
