New Delhi, September 15 (H.S.): With the festive season getting underway, the e-commerce sector is witnessing the creation of a large number of employment opportunities. In view of the rising demand for online shopping, Flipkart has announced the creation of more than 2.5 lakh employment opportunities across the country, including opportunities for gig workers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the e-commerce platform said it has created more than 2.5 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities across India to meet the surge in demand ahead of the upcoming festive season. Of these, around 75,000 opportunities are for first-time job seekers, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the total. The recruitment drive is being conducted across more than 7,000 eKart centres nationwide.

Flipkart said these opportunities are available across more than 7,000 eKart centres, including fulfilment centres, sortation hubs and last-mile delivery operations. With more than 900 new delivery hubs and around 1.4 lakh additional last-mile employment opportunities being created for the festive season, Flipkart is rapidly expanding its delivery network to meet the growing customer demand ahead of the Big Billion Days sale.

According to the company, 60 per cent of the new jobs created this season are associated with last-mile operations, reflecting the expansion of Flipkart Minutes and the growing demand in Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets. The expansion is also creating greater opportunities for women and persons with disabilities within Flipkart's supply chain. Women now account for more than 20 per cent of the workforce engaged in supply-chain operations, while the participation of persons with disabilities in warehousing and delivery operations has also increased.

Flipkart Group Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar said, Commerce at scale creates opportunities at scale, whether in the form of jobs, livelihoods or entrepreneurship. He said that around 75,000 people entering the world of work for the first time through Flipkart this festive season are becoming part of the same broader ecosystem.
