Guwahati, 15 September (HS): The 59th Engineers’ Day was celebrated here on Tuesday with a day-long programme organised by The Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre, at Panbazar to mark the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

The programme began at 10 am with the floral tribute to the bust of Sir Visvesvaraya installed on the institution’s premises. The main programme in the afternoon was presided over by Bhaven Kalita, chairman of the Assam State Centre, while its honorary secretary Gokul Bhuyan delivered the welcome address.

Engineer Pulak Sharma, fellow and former secretary of the institution, highlighted the life and achievements of Sir Visvesvaraya. Dr Mukul Bora, Vice-Chancellor of North Lakhimpur University, attended as the chief speaker and delivered a lecture on this year’s theme, “Engineering Excellence for a Sustainable and Technologically Sovereign India.”

Engineer Dr Plaban Bora introduced the chief speaker. Four distinguished engineers — Dilip Sharma (Civil Engineering), Manojit Mishra (Electrical Engineering), Anirban Das (Chemical Engineering) and Dr Sharad Bahurao Gokhale (Environmental Engineering) — were felicitated for their contributions to their respective fields.

A quarterly newsletter of the Assam State Centre was also released on the occasion. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by engineer Surdas Bhattacharjee. Institution members and a large number of people attended the celebrations.-----------
