Guwahati, 15 September (HS): The BJP is confident of securing victory in the forthcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, with development, governance and public welfare forming the core of its campaign, Assam BJP spokesperson Kishor Kumar Bhattacharya said on Tuesday.
Addressing the media at the party headquarters in Guwahati, Bhattacharya said the entry of Congress and AIUDF candidates has made the contest more decisive, but the BJP remains confident despite Nagaon being considered a challenging constituency.
He highlighted major development projects in Nagaon and Morigaon districts, including the ₹27,000-crore Jagiroad Semiconductor Project, development of Batadrava Than, Nagaon Medical College, a 100-MW solar power project, modernisation of Nurul Amin Stadium and the Assam Gaurav Path. He also cited the modernisation of Haibargaon Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a cost of around ₹16 crore.
Bhattacharya said the proposed ₹3,250-crore four-lane Brahmaputra bridge connecting Bhuragaon with Burigaon-Kharupetia would significantly improve connectivity between Central and North Assam. He also highlighted development initiatives in Morigaon, including road, urban infrastructure and cultural projects.
He said the proposed Kaziranga Elevated Corridor would further boost connectivity, tourism and economic opportunities in the region. According to Bhattacharya, the government’s measures against child marriage and polygamy, along with the abolition of triple talaq, have strengthened the dignity and security of women, particularly those from minority communities.
On BJP candidate Debashis Sharma, Bhattacharya said his record of public service and grassroots connect would provide the party with an additional advantage. He particularly referred to Sharma’s humanitarian assistance to cancer patients from Assam during his tenure in Mumbai.
Bhattacharya expressed confidence that the combination of development, welfare-oriented governance and Sharma’s personal connect with people would influence the electoral verdict in the Nagaon by-election.------------
