Guwahati, 14 September (HS): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday said the party has not yet finalised the candidate for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. Asked when the Congress would announce its nominee, Gogoi said he was still not certain about the exact timing of the announcement.

However, he indicated that the party could declare its candidate either on Monday or Tuesday. The Congress is yet to officially name its candidate for the by-election, while the BJP has already fielded retired IAS officer Debasish Sharma.

The Nagaon by-election is scheduled to be held on October 6, with counting of votes on October 9. The delay in finalising the Congress nominee has drawn attention as the deadline for filing nomination papers approaches.

Gogoi's remarks indicate that the Congress is likely to end the suspense over its candidate within the next 24 to 48 hours.---------------
