Kozhikode, 14 September (H.S.):The general discussion at the CPM’s extended State Committee meeting in Kozhikode will conclude on Monday amid criticism that the draft review report presented by State secretary M.V. Govindan has failed to adequately address the leadership’s responsibility for the party’s electoral setbacks.

Several delegates reportedly described the report as weak during the opening day of the meeting. They argued that the State leadership had attempted to place the responsibility for the defeat on party workers and local committees without conducting a critical assessment of decisions taken by the State Secretariat.

Members of the Kannur district committee raised strong objections to the report during the general discussion. They questioned why the controversy surrounding the selection of the party’s candidate in Taliparamba had not been mentioned, even though the report examined the party’s defeat in Payyannur.

Some delegates reportedly alleged that the State leadership had completely failed to understand the political mood among voters. They demanded greater accountability from senior leaders and a more comprehensive examination of the organisational and political factors that contributed to the setback.

The meeting is discussing a four-pronged strategy to correct organisational weaknesses identified during the review. The role of the CPM’s central leadership is expected to be crucial in monitoring and guiding the follow-up process.

However, the leadership has placed restrictions on the group discussions to prevent them from turning into sessions of intense personal criticism. Delegates have been instructed to avoid individual-centred attacks and focus instead on the broader organisational problems confronting the party.

Each district has been allotted 30 minutes to present its views during the discussion. Representatives of class and mass organisations have been given between five and 10 minutes.

The leadership is expected to respond after the general discussion concludes. The meeting may also finalise mechanisms to periodically review whether the corrective measures have been implemented at different levels of the organisation.
