Guwahati, 14 September (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of revered Sattriya culture exponent and Padma Shri awardee Gopiram Bargaayan Burhabhakta of Uttar Kamalabari Satra in Majuli.

In a social media post, Sarma said the news of the passing of the renowned practitioner, who dedicated his entire life to the pursuit and preservation of Sattriya culture and Bargeet traditions in Majuli, had deeply saddened him. He said Bargaayan Burhabhakta made an invaluable contribution to Assam’s cultural heritage through his lifelong সাধনা and work in the Sattriya tradition.

The Chief Minister noted that the late exponent had been honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi Award. He described his demise as an irreparable loss to Assam’s spiritual and cultural world.

Sarma conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, disciples, followers and countless admirers of the revered Sattriya practitioner. He also announced that the state government had decided to conduct his last rites with full state honours.

The Chief Minister paid his heartfelt tribute to the departed soul and prayed to the Lord for eternal peace for the departed saint. “Om Shanti,” he said.------------
