Anantapur, 14 September (H.S.): Residents of Settur village in Basampalli mandal of Anantapur district have decided not to organise Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations this year as the village’s traditional Maremma Ammavari Utsavams are scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
The annual Maremma Ammavari festivities are generally held one or two days before Vinayaka Chavithi. This year, however, the celebrations coincide with Ganesh Chaturthi, which is being observed across the country.
According to villagers, they felt it would not be appropriate to organise Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations while the Maremma Ammavari Utsavams were underway. Non-vegetarian food is traditionally prepared as part of the village festival, they said.
In view of the timing of the two festivals and the village’s traditional practices, residents have decided to stay away from
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations this year.
Instead, villagers will participate in the Maremma Ammavari Utsavams, which begin on Tuesday.
The decision reflects the local tradition associated with the annual Maremma Ammavari festival and is specific to Settur village.
