NEW DELHI, September 13 (H.S.): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday at the 18th BRICS Summit that today’s economic, demographic and geopolitical realities are fundamentally different from those of 1945. He stressed that the architecture of global institutions must evolve in accordance with changing realities and called for reforms in the United Nations Security Council and the Bretton Woods system.

Guterres said the world is rapidly moving towards a multipolar order. Multipolarity, he noted, can help bring greater balance and equity to the global system and its institutions. In line with the theme of the BRICS Summit, he said the world must advance on the path of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainable development. These, he emphasised, are essential for achieving inclusive global growth.

Guterres outlined four key priorities for promoting inclusive global development. The first is financial reform, which requires greater financial resources for developing countries, debt relief and enhanced representation for them in global financial institutions.

The second priority is technology. He called for efforts to bridge the artificial intelligence divide and ensure that developing countries have access to computing capacity, data and the necessary skills.

The third priority is climate justice. This includes promoting renewable energy, reducing emissions and ensuring adequate climate finance for developing countries.

The fourth priority is peace. This requires peaceful resolutions to conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and elsewhere, along with respect for the United Nations Charter and international law.
