Hyderabad, 13 September (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad has forecast very heavy monsoon rainfall in Telangana on Sunday and issued an orange alert in view of the expected weather conditions.

Several districts are likely to witness thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy to very heavy rainfall, according to the weather department.

Weather enthusiast T Balaji said thunderstorms were likely across parts of central, northern and southern Telangana during the midnight and early morning hours, including Hyderabad. The areas mentioned include Medak, Siddipet, Kamareddy,

Rajanna-Sircilla, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Nizamabad, Hanamkonda, Warangal, Rangareddy, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Nalgonda, Adilabad and Kumaram Bheem Asifabad.

Telangana has so far received 519.1 mm of rainfall during the current southwest monsoon against the normal 649.9 mm, recording a 20 per cent deficit.

Hanamkonda has recorded the highest rainfall deficit, with 378.2 mm against its normal rainfall of 714.1 mm, a shortfall of 47 per cent.

Several other districts have also recorded rainfall deficits of more than 30 per cent. These include Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jangaon, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Jogulamba Gadwal and Khammam.

The IMD alert comes amid the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning accompanying the expected rainfall in various parts of the State. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms, particularly during periods of lightning activity.

The forecast covers September 13, when the State is expected to experience an increase in monsoon activity, with several districts likely to receive significant rainfall.

The IMD’s orange alert indicates the possibility of heavy weather conditions requiring increased preparedness, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and other rain-related disruptions.
