Haflong (Assam), 13 September (H.S.): The forest department in Assam’s Lanka area stopped a passenger train during the night to facilitate the safe movement of a large herd of elephants crossing a railway track, officials said.

The elephant herd had moved out from the Lumding forest area in search of food and was heading towards Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong when it reached the railway corridor. Anticipating the risk of a possible collision between the elephants and the train, forest personnel coordinated with railway authorities and ensured that the passenger train was halted.

The elephants were subsequently allowed to cross the railway track safely before the train was permitted to proceed. The timely intervention by the forest department helped prevent a potentially dangerous human-wildlife conflict and ensured the safe passage of the elephant herd.------------
