New Delhi, 13 September (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a session on ‘Strengthening Inclusive Global Governance and Multilateralism’ during the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi on September 12. He said the Global South is at the forefront of crises emerging across the world today, yet remains underrepresented in decision-making processes. He stressed the need to align global governance institutions with contemporary global realities and provide developing countries with greater representation in decision-making.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi emphasised that the Global South must not remain merely a rule-taker but should have a meaningful role in shaping the rules. He particularly underlined the need to enhance the representation of the Global South in institutions such as the United Nations Security Council. He said BRICS could provide young diplomats and policymakers from the Global South with opportunities to strengthen their negotiating capabilities, gain practical training and access legal expertise.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the contribution of seafarers to maritime trade. He said that despite playing a vital role in global trade, seafarers often do not receive adequate support during times of crisis. To address this, he proposed the establishment of a ‘Seafarers’ Emergency Support Network’.

He said the future belongs to everyone and, therefore, everyone should have an equal say in shaping that future. He emphasised the need for the global order to move beyond merely having a voice towards meaningful influence and from privilege towards partnership.

At the conclusion of the session, the New Delhi BRICS Leaders’ Declaration was adopted. The declaration outlines shared priorities, commitments and the way forward for cooperation within BRICS.
