
Tarn Taran, 12 September (H.S.): A man accused in the 2022 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack on Sarhali police station was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Naushera Pannuan village late Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Ajmeet Singh, who had been arrested in connection with the RPG attack case and was lodged in Bathinda jail. He was recently released on bail.
According to preliminary information, Ajmeet Singh was standing outside the government hospital in the village when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle reached the spot and opened fire at him. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and died at the scene.
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and initiated an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Ajmeet Singh’s name had surfaced during the investigation into the RPG attack on Sarhali police station on December 9, 2022. In that incident, two minor attackers allegedly targeted the police station building with an RPG-26 at around 11:18 pm.
Following the attack, Punjab Police had claimed to have uncovered a terror module linked to a network operating from abroad. Ajmeet Singh was subsequently arrested in the case and remained in Bathinda jail before securing bail.
The motive behind his killing has not yet been established. Police are examining various angles, including possible personal enmity, criminal rivalry and other disputes.
SP (Investigation) Dr Riputapan Singh said the police were investigating the case from different angles. A case has been registered against unidentified persons and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the assailants.
