BRICS Pushes Global Governance Overhaul, Backs Greater UN Role for India, Brazil

NEW DELHI, September 12 (H.S.): BRICS countries have reiterated support for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, with China and Russia backing the aspirations of India and Brazil to play a greater role in the UN.

In the New Delhi Declaration, BRICS leaders called for UN Security Council reform to make the body more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, while increasing the representation of developing countries.

The leaders said the reform should amplify the voice of the Global South and adequately reflect the aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including BRICS members, to play a greater role in international affairs.

“China and Russia, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, reiterate their support to the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a greater role in the UN, including its Security Council,” the declaration said.

The declaration also recognised the legitimate aspirations of African countries as reflected in the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration.

The BRICS leaders said reform of the Security Council should help it respond more effectively to prevailing global challenges and strengthen the voice and representation of the Global South.
