NEW DELHI, September 12 (H.S.): BRICS countries have condemned the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, including economic and secondary sanctions, and voiced deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East and West Asia.

In the New Delhi Declaration, BRICS leaders said such unilateral measures were contrary to international law and had far-reaching negative implications for the human rights of people in targeted states, including their rights to development, health and food security.

The leaders said sanctions disproportionately affect poor and vulnerable sections of the population, while also deepening the digital divide and exacerbating environmental challenges.

They called for the elimination of such measures, saying they undermine international law and the principles and purposes of the UN Charter. The leaders also reaffirmed their opposition to unilateral coercive measures that are contrary to international law and the UN Charter, including sanctions not authorised by the UN Security Council.

Concern Over West Asia Tensions

The BRICS leaders expressed deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East and West Asia.

Recalling their respective national positions, they called for maximum restraint and urged all sides to avoid actions that could further aggravate the situation.

They also stressed the need to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

The leaders encouraged increased efforts through dialogue and diplomacy towards a long-term understanding that could contribute to lasting peace, security and stability in the region.

They further stressed the need to work together to maintain the smooth flow of global trade, supply chains and energy in accordance with applicable international law.
