New Delhi, 11 September (H.S.):

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed confidence that the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi would provide an opportunity for positive and meaningful discussions on major global issues and contribute to the welfare of people around the world.

In a message ahead of the summit, PM Modi said leaders from different parts of the world would gather in India and expressed hope that their deliberations would lead to constructive outcomes. The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as India prepares to host the two-day summit at a time when the international community is facing multiple economic, geopolitical and security challenges. India is expected to use its BRICS chairship to promote dialogue, cooperation and collective solutions to issues affecting member countries and the wider Global South.

The summit is expected to focus on strengthening resilience among BRICS countries. Key areas likely to feature in discussions include food security, energy security, disaster risk reduction and the stability of critical supply chains.

Disaster risk reduction is another important area of discussion. India has increasingly emphasised international cooperation in disaster preparedness, early warning systems, resilient infrastructure and emergency response, particularly as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.

PM Modi has repeatedly stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing global challenges. At earlier BRICS meetings, he has called for greater cooperation on issues including terrorism, climate change, food and energy security, cyber security and emerging technologies.

India is also expected to highlight the concerns and priorities of developing countries during the summit. New Delhi has consistently advocated a stronger voice for the Global South in international institutions and greater representation for developing economies in global decision-making.

The presence of senior leaders from major BRICS countries is expected to add significance to the summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are among the prominent leaders expected to attend the New Delhi meeting.

The summit will provide India with an opportunity to strengthen its engagement with BRICS members and promote cooperation on common economic and developmental priorities. It will also offer a platform for leaders to exchange views on pressing international issues.
