Stock Market Under Pressure in Early Trade, Sensex and Nifty Fall

Domestic equity markets were trading lower in early trade on Friday amid weak global cues. The market opened on a subdued note, and both the Sensex and Nifty extended their declines shortly after the opening bell. However, buying activity emerged shortly before 10 a.m., helping both indices recover some ground. Despite the recovery, after the first hour of trading, the Sensex was down 0.70 percent and the Nifty was lower by 0.80 percent.

The BSE Sensex opened at 74,309.16 points, down 593.43 points, or 0.79 percent. Selling pressure immediately after the opening dragged the index to an intraday low of 74,160.16 points. However, buyers stepped in shortly before 10 a.m., leading to a gradual improvement in the index. Amid continued buying and selling activity, the Sensex was trading at 74,381.92 points at 10:15 a.m., down 520.67 points, or 0.70 percent, after the first hour of trading.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty began the day at 23,270.30 points, down 207.50 points, or 0.88 percent. The index slipped to 23,231.40 points soon after the market opened as selling pressure intensified. Buyers subsequently became active, helping the index recover some of its losses. At 10:15 a.m., after the first hour of trading, the Nifty was trading at 23,290.50 points, down 187.30 points, or 0.80 percent, amid continued buying and selling.

A total of 2,885 stocks were actively traded in the market so far. Of these, 553 stocks were trading in positive territory, while 2,332 were in the red. Among the 30 Sensex constituents, five stocks were trading higher with support from buying interest, while 25 were under selling pressure. Similarly, 11 of the 50 Nifty constituents were trading in the green, while 39 were trading lower.

After the first hour of trading, shares of major companies including Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, ONGC and TCS were trading with gains ranging from 0.38 percent to 1.22 percent. On the other hand, shares of Hindalco Industries, Tata Steel, Adani Enterprises, Shriram Finance and Eternal were trading lower, with declines ranging from 1.15 percent to 3.18 percent.

In the previous trading session on Thursday, the Sensex had closed at 74,902.59 points, gaining 138.36 points, or 0.19 percent. The Nifty, meanwhile, ended Thursday’s trading at 23,477.80 points, up 46.30 points, or 0.20 percent.
