New Delhi, 11 September (H.S.):

The Delhi High Court is set to get eight new judges after the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended their appointments. The recommendation is aimed at strengthening the judicial capacity of the Delhi High Court and addressing the existing vacancy position.

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of Gurvinder Pal Singh, Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Sharma, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Dr. Aditi Chaudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj for appointment as judges of the Delhi High Court.

Of the eight names recommended, three are women judicial officers.

The sanctioned strength of the Delhi High Court is 60 judges. At present, the court has 44 judges. If the Centre approves the appointment of all eight recommended judges, the total strength of the Delhi High Court will rise to 52.

The recommendations come as part of efforts to strengthen the higher judiciary and improve the court’s capacity to deal with its workload and pending cases.
