Kolkata, 10 September (H.S.): West Bengal CID and STF arrested Sumit Roy, an aide to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, shortly after the Supreme Court ended the legal protection granted to him in connection with the Shalbani land corruption case.

Following his arrest, Roy was taken to Bhawani Bhavan for questioning. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed Roy’s arrest in the state Assembly and alleged that he was involved in collecting money on behalf of Abhishek Banerjee’s brother.

The investigating agencies became active soon after the Supreme Court on Thursday withdrew the legal protection granted to Roy. A large team of CID and STF officials reached 121, Kalighat Road, the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, after receiving information that Roy was present there.

The officials arrived at the premises along with a videographer. The main gate was found locked. The officers then called out and got the gate opened. During their entry into the premises, an altercation allegedly took place between the officials and security personnel.

The CID team subsequently entered the premises and detained Roy. He was questioned for some time before being arrested and taken away in an investigating agency vehicle. The entire operation was videographed by the CID.

Roy is likely to be questioned further in connection with the Shalbani land corruption case.
