Kareena Kapoor is currently in the spotlight for her upcoming film ‘Daayra’. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film stars Kareena opposite Prithviraj Sukumaran and is scheduled to release in theatres on September 18. Amid the promotional buzz surrounding the film, the actress has shared her views on the ‘herd mentality’ prevalent in Bollywood.

Citing the success of Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’ as an example, Kareena said audiences today are more discerning than ever and are capable of identifying whether a film works for them or not.

In an interview, Kareena said viewers no longer head to theatres simply because a film features a major star or belongs to a particular genre. According to the actress, audiences want to watch films that genuinely appeal to them.

She said the industry is no longer operating in an era dominated solely by young romantic stories or any one particular genre. Referring to the success of ‘Animal’, Kareena pointed out that just because violence worked in one film does not mean filmmakers can assume that incorporating violence into every subsequent film will automatically guarantee success.

Kareena further observed that the film industry often falls victim to a herd mentality. According to her, producers cannot approach filmmaking with the assumption that audiences will automatically embrace a movie simply because it is a comedy.

She also stressed that it is unrealistic to expect every film to generate box-office collections of Rs 200 crore or Rs 500 crore. In her view, this mindset is gradually changing, with audiences themselves playing an important role in encouraging filmmakers to move away from formula-driven approaches.

Kareena’s comments come at a time when Bollywood continues to witness changing audience preferences, with viewers increasingly seeking distinctive stories, strong performances and fresh cinematic experiences rather than relying solely on star power or established formulas.

Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Animal’ was released in 2023 and was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The film became a major commercial success and sparked considerable discussion over its portrayal of violence, masculinity and relationships.
