Kolkata, 10 September (H.S.) : A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms across West Bengal on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy rainfall in several districts of south Bengal. Gusty winds and lightning are also expected in parts of the state.

According to the IMD forecast, most districts of south Bengal are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers during the day. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram and South 24 Parganas, where rainfall could range between 7 and 11 cm.

Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal are also likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by rain. Gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may occur at some places. In view of the possibility of lightning, people have been advised to exercise caution and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.

In north Bengal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur are also likely to receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers at several places. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph accompanied by lightning are likely at one or two places in all districts of north Bengal.

The weather office said no significant rise in temperature is expected due to the rainfall. However, high humidity may continue to cause uncomfortable weather conditions in several parts of south Bengal. Kolkata is likely to record a maximum temperature of around 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum of around 27 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised to remain cautious in view of the possibility of rough sea conditions. The sea is likely to remain rough along the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh, as well as over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, where strong winds may prevail.

The weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period.
