Kolkata, 10 September (H.S.) : Kolkata's historic Eden Gardens is set to become a major venue for Bengal's cultural celebrations alongside cricket this year, with special programmes being planned on the occasion of Durga Puja.

According to sources, the main attraction of the proposed programme will be a grand event on October 10, the day of Mahalaya. The state government is reportedly planning to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the event.

Special arrangements are expected to be made at Eden Gardens for around 21 days, from September 25 to October 15. The preparations will involve setting up a stage, decorations, lighting, security arrangements and other facilities, which are likely to affect the regular cricket schedule at the venue.

As a result, changes have also been reported in the proposed Bengal-Delhi Ranji Trophy match at Eden Gardens, with the fixture likely to be shifted to Kalyani.

Mahalaya holds special religious and cultural significance in Bengal and marks the beginning of the festive atmosphere ahead of Durga Puja. This year, the state government plans to use the historic Eden Gardens as the venue for a grand celebration.

Eden Gardens has a history spanning nearly 162 years and was established in 1864. Named after the Eden family, it is one of Kolkata's oldest and most prestigious sporting venues.

The first Test match at Eden Gardens was played between India and England in 1934. Since then, the venue has witnessed several landmark moments in Indian cricket, including World Cup matches, historic Tests and memorable international fixtures.

The 1987 Cricket World Cup final was held at Eden Gardens. The venue also hosted the 1993 Hero Cup semi-final and the 1996 World Cup semi-final. The historic 2001 Test between India and Australia is another landmark match associated with the stadium.

Eden Gardens has long been more than just a cricket venue. It has also hosted football and other major sporting events. In 1977, football legend Pele was present at the stadium when New York Cosmos played an exhibition match against Mohun Bagan.
