Villagers agitate after a farmer was killed in Tiger attack

Wardha, 10 Sept (HS): A farmer was killed in attack by a tiger in Raipur

forest area when he was going to his farm on Wednesday evening. The tiger

attacked Bhagwanji Dhurve, a resident of Raipur Jangli in Wardha District. He

died on the spot.

Growing attacks by wild animals has led to discontent among the

villages, who staged agitation on Thursday morning demanding a financial

support of Rs 1 crore to Bhagwan Dhurve’s family. Earlier another villager

Khobragade was killed by a tiger, and a shepherd was attacked by a bear in

July-August. After the post-mortem the villagers along with Dhurve family

members refused to accept the body, which was again taken back to a mortuary.

MP Amar Kale met the villagers on Thursday afternoon to discuss their

demands. If a member of the family cannot be offered a job, the family should

be given financial support of Rs 1 crore, the villagers demanded.

The Forest Department agreed for financial support of Rs 25 lakh, the

demand for Rs 1 crore does not fit the existing rules. The villagers were firm

on compensation of Rs 1 crore. Till then the body of Bhagwan Dhurve will be

kept at the mortuary. MP Kale also supported their demand of depositing Rs 1

crore, and on its interest the family members can manage their living.
