Kolkata, 10 September (H.S.) : Ahead of the upcoming Assembly by-elections in West Bengal, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has constituted a 263-member state executive committee and assigned senior leaders charge of various organisational districts.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has been given responsibility for the Tamluk organisational district, which includes the politically significant Nandigram Assembly constituency. The Nandigram seat is scheduled to go to the polls on October 6. The Rejinagar Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district will also witness a by-election.

The formation of the new state executive had been pending for more than a year since state BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya took charge. The party has now constituted the committee and entrusted senior leaders with organisational responsibilities aimed at strengthening the party ahead of the elections.

The new state executive includes several senior BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari’s father and former Tamluk MP Sisir Adhikari, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and Shantanu Thakur, besides several state ministers and senior party leaders.

Sisir Adhikari has been assigned responsibility for the Kanthi organisational district, while Sukanta Majumdar will oversee South Dinajpur and Shantanu Thakur will be responsible for the Bangaon organisational district.

Among the state ministers, Tapas Roy has been given charge of North Kolkata, Jagannath Chattopadhyay will oversee Birbhum, Nisith Pramanik will be responsible for Cooch Behar and Shankar Ghosh will look after the Siliguri organisational district.

According to party sources, the decision to assign organisational district responsibilities to senior leaders ahead of the by-elections is aimed at strengthening the party organisation at the grassroots level and intensifying preparations for the polls.
