New Delhi, 01 September (H.S.): The domestic equity market remained under pressure during early trading on Tuesday, with both benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, moving lower after a flat and mixed opening. Although buyers initially attempted to support the market through fresh purchases, selling pressure soon emerged, pushing both indices into negative territory.

After the first hour of trading, the Sensex was down 0.10 per cent, while the Nifty had declined 0.14 per cent amid continued buying and selling activity.

The BSE Sensex opened marginally higher by 36.84 points, or 0.05 per cent, at 76,994.11. Supported by initial buying, the index gained more than 125 points within the first 20 minutes to touch 77,083.49. However, the early gains failed to hold as selling pressure intensified, dragging the Sensex into negative territory. The index subsequently fell to 76,764.26.

Buying interest then returned, leading to a modest recovery. At around 10:15 a.m., after the first hour of trading, the Sensex was down 79.93 points, or 0.10 per cent, at 76,877.34.

The NSE Nifty, meanwhile, opened marginally lower by 2.85 points, or 0.01 per cent, at 24,077.55. The index briefly recovered into positive territory after the opening bell, supported by buying, and climbed to 24,082.60. However, the recovery proved short-lived, with renewed selling pressure pulling the index back into the red.

Continued selling dragged the Nifty to an intraday low of 24,009.50 around 10 a.m. Subsequent buying activity helped the index recover some ground. At 10:15 a.m., the Nifty was trading 34.30 points, or 0.14 per cent, lower at 24,046.10.

At that point, a total of 2,962 stocks were actively trading in the market. Of these, 1,310 stocks were trading in positive territory, while 1,652 were in the red. Among the 30 Sensex constituents, 12 stocks were advancing and 18 were declining. Similarly, 22 of the 50 Nifty constituents were trading higher, while 28 were trading lower.

Among major companies, shares of Adani Ports, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Auto and Reliance Industries were trading with gains ranging from 2.02 per cent to 3.53 per cent after the first hour of trade.

On the other hand, shares of Shriram Finance, Max Healthcare, InterGlobe Aviation, Nestle and Bajaj Finserv were among the major laggards, declining between 2.74 per cent and 3.52 per cent.

The domestic market had ended lower in the previous trading session on Monday. The Sensex declined 307.24 points, or 0.40 per cent, to close at 76,957.27, while the Nifty fell 95.25 points, or 0.39 per cent, to end the session at 24,080.40.
