New Delhi, 09 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet India’s medal-winning athletes from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday at 4 pm, following the country’s impressive campaign at the multi-sport event.

India finished fourth in the overall medal standings with 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. The performance was particularly significant because several sports that have traditionally contributed heavily to India’s Commonwealth Games medal tally, including wrestling, badminton and shooting, were not part of the Glasgow programme.

Despite the absence of these established medal-winning disciplines, Indian athletes produced strong results across boxing, weightlifting, judo, athletics and para-sports, highlighting the country’s expanding sporting base.

Boxing emerged as one of India’s strongest disciplines, with the contingent securing 10 medals, including seven gold. It was India’s best-ever boxing medal haul at a Commonwealth Games. Indian women boxers played a major role in the success, accounting for five of the seven gold medals.

Judo also delivered a historic performance. Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won gold medals, helping India secure two Commonwealth Games judo golds at the same edition for the first time. The country won four medals in judo overall.

In weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu once again underlined her status as one of India’s leading athletes by winning gold. The victory marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, further extending her remarkable record at the event. Indian weightlifters won eight medals overall, maintaining the discipline’s strong contribution to India’s medal tally.

Athletics also provided notable moments for the Indian contingent. Gulveer Singh won silver in the men’s 10,000 metres and bronze in the 5,000 metres. With two medals, he became the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two medals at the same Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone for Indian distance running.

India’s para athletes further strengthened the country’s performance by winning seven medals. Sharmila Dhankar created history by claiming India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in para athletics, winning the women’s F57 shot put. Dilip Mahadu Gavit also secured gold in the men’s T47 100 metres.
