Sri Vijaya Puram, 09 August (H.S.): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday launched the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, calling for the national flag to remain a powerful symbol of unity, patriotism and the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.

Addressing a gathering at the DBRAIT Auditorium in Sri Vijaya Puram, Radhakrishnan said India’s strength lies in its unity and asserted that “Bharat is one and will always remain one.” He said launching the campaign from the historic island territory carried special significance given its deep association with India’s freedom movement.

The Vice President recalled the words of renowned Tamil poet and nationalist Subramania Bharati, highlighting the profound reverence associated with the national flag. He referred to Bharati’s sentiment that his head would never bow except before the national flag of Mother Bharat.

Radhakrishnan said the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative seeks to carry forward this spirit by encouraging citizens across the country to come together under the Tricolour. The campaign, he said, represents a shared national identity, a common homeland and a collective destiny.

The initiative has become an important part of the celebrations leading up to Independence Day, encouraging citizens to display the national flag at their homes and participate in activities centred on patriotism and national unity. Over the years, the campaign has witnessed widespread participation, with the Tricolour being displayed at homes, educational institutions, workplaces and public places.

The choice of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the launch also underscores the territory’s historical connection with India’s freedom struggle. The islands, particularly the Cellular Jail, hold a prominent place in the country’s national memory because of the imprisonment, suffering and sacrifices endured by freedom fighters during British rule.

Radhakrishnan’s message comes ahead of Independence Day on August 15, with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign seeking to make the national flag a visible expression of unity, patriotism and collective pride across the country.
