New Delhi, 07 August (H.S.): The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking registration of an FIR and an investigation into the case involving burnt currency notes allegedly found at the official residence of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma. The apex court observed that the petition appeared to have been filed for publicity purposes.

The petition was filed by Ghanshyam Upadhyay. It argued that although Justice Verma had resigned from his post, his resignation did not absolve him of criminal responsibility for the alleged unexplained cash found at his residence.

The plea stated that an earlier similar petition had been dismissed on a technical ground that no complaint had been filed before approaching the court. It claimed that the required procedure had now been completed. The petition further stated that Justice Verma had also retired and there was no legal immunity preventing prosecution against him.

The Supreme Court, however, rejected the plea and refused to direct the registration of an FIR or a probe into the matter.

It may be noted that Justice Yashwant Verma resigned from his post on April 10. Impeachment proceedings against him are also pending.
