New Delhi, 07 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, continuing his daily tradition of sharing inspirational Sanskrit verses, posted a Subhashitam on social media on Thursday, comparing the nature of a virtuous person to that of the moon and highlighting the spirit of selfless service.

Sharing the verse on X, the Prime Minister wrote:

किं चन्द्रमाः प्रत्युपकारलिप्सया करोति गोभिः कुमुदावबोधनम्।

स्वभाव एवोन्नतचेतसां सतां परोपकारव्यसनं हि जीवितम्॥

According to the explanation shared on the Prime Minister's official X handle, the verse means:

The moon does not illuminate the night-blooming lily with its rays in expectation of any reward or favour in return. It does so because it is its inherent nature. Likewise, noble and large-hearted individuals help others without any selfish motive or expectation, as selfless service is an intrinsic part of their character.

The Subhashitam shared by the Prime Minister is attributed to the eminent Sanskrit poet Bhavabhuti. The verse is also found in classical Sanskrit compilations, including Rasikalakshana (Rasikajivana), Sharngadhara Paddhati and Subhashita Ratna Bhandagaram.
