New Delhi, 07 August (H.S.): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and several other leaders on Friday extended heartfelt greetings to the country’s weavers on the occasion of National Handloom Day.

The Vice President said in a post on X, “India’s handloom tradition is a vibrant legacy woven with artistry, strength and craftsmanship passed down through generations. On this occasion, we salute the weavers and artisans whose dedication keeps this invaluable heritage alive, while creating sustainable employment and empowering rural communities. Every handwoven creation reflects the richness of our culture and the spirit of self-reliance.”

He urged people to celebrate the invaluable contribution of weavers by choosing handloom products, supporting local artisans and strengthening the vision of “Vocal for Local” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India).

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said National Handloom Day is an occasion to honour the hard work, skills and centuries-old heritage of weavers across the country. He said remarkable handloom products such as Kota Doria represent India’s cultural richness and serve as powerful symbols of a self-reliant India. He emphasised the need to adopt handloom products, support local weavers and carry forward the nation’s cultural heritage.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called upon citizens to honour all weavers, preserve India’s centuries-old weaving traditions and reaffirm their commitment to “Vocal for Local” by proudly choosing handloom products.

Amit Shah said India’s handloom sector, which has been deeply associated with the freedom movement, represents the country’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated National Handloom Day to preserve the art of handloom weaving and provide it with a new dimension. Shah added that the Modi government is promoting the sector by creating new opportunities for weavers through global trade agreements and domestic support mechanisms.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the soul of India resides in every handloom weave. He said these creations are woven with skill, tradition and the dedication of generations. Gadkari paid tribute to artisans whose craftsmanship enriches the country’s cultural identity and supports the livelihoods of countless people.

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh said handloom is not merely a means of producing textiles but a strong foundation of India’s rich cultural heritage, exceptional craftsmanship and the livelihood of millions of weaver families. He said every handloom product represents the skill, dedication of Indian weavers and the resolve of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Singh added that National Handloom Day provides an opportunity to take pride in India’s heritage, honour the contribution of weavers and further strengthen the commitment to take Indian handloom traditions to new heights.
