The Lok Sabha on Thursday paid tribute to the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan on the 81st anniversary of the tragic events. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led the House in remembering the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear warfare and reiterated India's commitment to global peace, harmony, and a world free from nuclear weapons.

Following the tribute, members of the House observed a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the nuclear attacks.

Addressing the House, Speaker Om Birla said that 81 years ago, atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945, respectively. He stated that the unprecedented tragedy claimed the lives of millions of innocent people and left countless others severely affected.

Birla said the attacks were the first instance that exposed the world to the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons. He added that the House reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating weapons of mass destruction and expressed its resolve to work towards ensuring global peace and harmony.

At the Speaker's request, members observed silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings.

After the tribute, Speaker Om Birla expressed concern over the continued disruptions in the House and urged Opposition members to cooperate in allowing Question Hour to function smoothly. He said that the people of the country expect Parliament to serve as a platform for meaningful discussions and dialogue, and that Question Hour remains a vital component of the democratic system.

Birla said citizens want to hear the questions raised by Members of Parliament and the government's responses during Question Hour. He appealed to members to return to their seats and help ensure the smooth functioning of the House.

The Speaker said Parliament is meant for discussions and debates, but repeated disruptions were affecting the dignity of the House. He criticised the practice of bringing placards into the chamber, saying such conduct was not in accordance with parliamentary traditions and that the country was watching these developments.

Assuring members that every issue, subject, and Bill would be given adequate time for discussion, Birla said MPs could effectively present their views through debate and dialogue. He once again appealed to all parties to cooperate in maintaining the smooth functioning of Parliament.

Amid continued protests and disruptions, the Lok Sabha Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House until 2 PM.
