New Delhi, 06 August (H.S.):NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Ambala Death Linked to Contaminated Drinking Water, Seeks Report from Haryana

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of a young woman, allegedly caused by jaundice after consuming contaminated drinking water in Shahzadpur of Haryana's Ambala district.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Haryana, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

According to media reports cited by the Commission, the woman was initially treated for jaundice at a local hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where she died during treatment.

The reports also stated that several other children in the area have been diagnosed with jaundice. Local residents have alleged that the drinking water supplied through public taps in the locality is contaminated.

The NHRC has directed that the report should also include details of the health condition of the affected children undergoing treatment, as well as the measures being taken by the state administration to address the issue and ensure the availability of safe drinking water.
