Chennai, 05 August (H.S.):

The TVK-led Tamil Nadu government will present its maiden Budget for 2026-27 in the State Assembly on Wednesday, with expectations running high over new welfare schemes, administrative reforms and measures to address the State’s challenging financial position.

Finance, Planning and Development Minister N. Marie Wilson will table his first Budget after assuming office. The exercise is expected to offer the clearest indication yet of the new government’s fiscal strategy and development priorities.

The Budget comes at a time when the government is operating with limited fiscal space, forcing it to tread cautiously on major spending commitments. Since taking office, the administration has largely refrained from announcing large-scale welfare programmes, with the Thaimaman Thanga Modhiram Scheme among its prominent initiatives.

Despite the constraints, the Budget is expected to unveil new schemes and policy measures aimed at strengthening governance, improving public service delivery and accelerating development in key sectors. The government’s plans to mobilise additional revenue and manage expenditure will also be closely watched.

The Budget will be particularly significant as the TVK government seeks to demonstrate how it intends to balance its election commitments with fiscal realities.

Following the presentation, the Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee will meet to finalise the duration and schedule of the Budget session.

The government will present its maiden Agriculture Budget on Thursday, with Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R. Vinoth expected to announce measures covering farmers’ welfare, irrigation, agricultural productivity and the rural economy.

A general discussion on both Budgets will follow, during which the Opposition is expected to raise questions over the government’s fiscal and policy priorities.

The Assembly will subsequently take up department-wise Demands for Grants, paving the way for ministers to announce sector-specific programmes and funding allocations.

The Budget session is expected to continue for around 25 days, marking the first major legislative and fiscal test for the TVK government since it assumed office.
