Solapur, 05 Aug (HS):

Auction of silk cocoon was first time held in Solapur. The farmers engaged in

sericulture were happy to get best price of Rs 820 per kilogramme, which is

highest in Maharashtra.

The auction was held in an effort to provide good

market for the produce at local level. Traders from all over Maharashtra

participated and bid for the record price. Usually the silk producers had to

depend on other districts for sale of the cocoons. They also saved on transport

of cocoons to other places.

This is considered to be encouragement for other

farmers for turning to sericulture, which requires less investment.
