Guwahati, 05 August (HS): The Assam State Freedom Fighters' Association has announced that it will observe Quit India Movement Remembrance Day on August 9 to commemorate the historic movement and honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters.

Expressing deep sorrow over the recent devastating floods in four Upper Assam districts, the association paid tribute to those who lost their lives and conveyed sympathy to families of the missing. It also thanked government agencies, voluntary organisations and individuals who have been engaged in rescue and relief operations.

The association informed that it has contributed ₹2 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund through its Flood Relief Fund, with donations received from 27 districts across the state. A delegation has also been sent to the flood-affected areas to distribute additional relief materials.

The announcement coincided with the 76th death anniversary of Assam's first Chief Minister and freedom fighter, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, who was remembered with heartfelt tributes for his contribution to the state and the nation.

As part of the August 9 observance, programmes highlighting the role of Bordoloi and other veteran freedom fighters in the Quit India Movement will be organised to familiarise the younger generation with their sacrifices and the nation's freedom struggle. District units in flood-unaffected areas have been asked to organise commemorative events.

The association has urged the Assam Government to officially sponsor the annual observance of Quit India Movement Remembrance Day from next year. It has also requested district units to submit memoranda to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma through their respective Deputy Commissioners, demanding family pensions for eligible descendants of Assam's martyrs and freedom fighters and seeking an announcement on the issue during the Independence Day address on August 15.

Additionally, the association appealed to the state government to allocate ₹50 lakh each for the construction of District Freedom Fighters' Bhawans in districts where government land has already been allotted, with the buildings to be constructed in a uniform design through the Public Works Department.---------------
