Kolkata, 05August (H.S.) : Traffic came to a standstill on Tala Bridge in north Kolkata on Tuesday evening after a young man climbed to the top of a lamp post and refused to come down, repeatedly demanding to speak to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m., when the man climbed halfway up the lamp post, tied his shirt around it, and then scaled it to the top in full public view. From his elevated position, he repeatedly shouted that he wanted to speak with the Chief Minister.

Eyewitnesses said the man later took out his mobile phone, showed videos to people gathered below, and began recording videos himself. He also performed several dangerous stunts, including hanging from the metal rods of the lamp post, raising concerns about his safety.

A large crowd gathered at the spot, with several motorists stopping their vehicles on the bridge to watch the incident. Despite repeated appeals from bystanders to climb down safely, the man refused to comply. Witnesses claimed he was also heard shouting threats against a local police station officer during the episode.

Police, the Fire and Emergency Services, and the Disaster Management team rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. After nearly 40 minutes, civic authorities brought in a tree-pruning hydraulic vehicle, which was used to safely bring the man down from the top of the lamp post.

The incident caused heavy traffic congestion on the stretch from Shyambazar to Chiriamore, leaving commuters stranded for a considerable period.

Police have taken the man into custody, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances and motive behind his actions.
