Kolkata, 05 August (H.S.) : The Independence Day parade on Kolkata's Red Road this year will feature 11 tableaux highlighting major welfare initiatives of both the Central and West Bengal governments, making it one of the key attractions of the celebrations.

According to government officials, the tableaux will showcase flagship schemes, including the Annapurna Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the free bus travel scheme for women, the VB-G Ram G Act, 2025, and several other welfare programmes introduced by the Centre and the state government.

A special tableau will also depict the life, legacy and contribution of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee to nation-building.

Ten state government departments, including the Public Works, Health, Transport, Power and Panchayat departments, are preparing tableaux highlighting their flagship projects and achievements. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will also present displays focusing on civic services and road safety awareness.

Government sources said that while the previous Trinamool Congress government under former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also featured tableaux based on government schemes during Independence Day celebrations, the number was usually limited to three or four. This year, the number has been increased to 11.

The main Independence Day function will begin at 10:30 a.m. on August 15 at Red Road. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will hoist the national flag, following which the ceremonial parade, tableau display and cultural performances will take place. The programme will also include a helicopter flower shower and is expected to last about an hour.

Security arrangements for the celebrations have been significantly strengthened in view of recent security concerns. Officials said a multi-layered security cover, advanced surveillance systems and a heavy deployment of police personnel will be put in place across Red Road and adjoining areas to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.
