New Delhi, 05 August (H.S.): Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan have been granted a one-year extension in service. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extensions, according to separate orders issued on Wednesday.

Under the extension, Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan will continue in office until August 30 next year, while Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan will serve until August 22 next year. Dr. Somanathan, a former Finance Secretary with a Ph.D. in Economics, assumed charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024, for an initial two-year tenure. Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, took over as Union Home Secretary in August 2024 after serving as Secretary, Ministry of Culture. This marks his second extension beyond his original retirement date.

Dr. T.V. Somanathan is a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics and is also a Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, and Company Secretary. During his distinguished career, he has served in several key positions in the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Finance, the World Bank, and the Government of Tamil Nadu. He has authored three books on economics and public policy and has published more than 80 research papers.

Govind Mohan has previously served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Additional Secretary, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, as well as Secretary, Ministry of Culture. He has also held important assignments in the Ministry of Finance, the Cabinet Secretariat, and the Embassy of India in the United States. A senior IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, Mohan possesses extensive experience in public administration, economic policy, and internal security.
