History is written when young people dare to dream with determination. Whenever the Indian Tricolour flies highest on the global stage, the entire nation swells with pride. Today, India’s Gen Z is no longer merely a symbol of potential; it has become synonymous with excellence and achievement.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, held in Scotland from 23 July to 2 August, were far more than a medal-winning campaign for India. They showcased the confidence, discipline and sporting excellence of a new generation determined to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse. Competing across eight mainstream sports and five para-sports, a contingent of 122 Indian athletes secured an impressive 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze, bringing immense honour to the nation on the world stage. Indian athletes also celebrated multiple double-podium finishes during the Games. Among the notable performers were Yamini Maurya, a judoka from the Madhya Pradesh Academy, and weightlifter Ajay Babu, both of whom won silver medals and brought distinction to both India and Madhya Pradesh.

These Commonwealth Games presented unique challenges. Several of India's traditional medal-winning disciplines—including wrestling, badminton, hockey, shooting and table tennis, were absent from the programme. Yet India's Gen Z athletes demonstrated that the country's sporting excellence is no longer confined to a handful of disciplines. Their performances reflected the remarkable diversification of Indian sport and the emergence of a new generation capable of excelling wherever opportunities arise.

India's young athletes are proving their mettle on every international platform available to them. Through unwavering determination, relentless hard work and exceptional talent, they are sending a powerful message to the world: India is no longer a nation that merely participates in global sporting events, it is rapidly progressing towards becoming a true sporting superpower.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, sustained efforts to promote sports, honour athletes and develop world-class sporting infrastructure have instilled new confidence in India's young competitors. Their achievements are a testament not only to their personal dedication, perseverance and discipline, but also to the growing sporting culture, modern infrastructure, talent development programmes and expanding opportunities available to young athletes across the country.

In Madhya Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, we are consistently working to strengthen sports infrastructure, nurture sporting talent and expand opportunities for aspiring athletes. Our objective is to develop world-class sportspersons, inspire greater youth participation and build modern sporting facilities across the state. We are constructing a sports complex in every Assembly constituency to ensure that a vibrant sporting culture flourishes throughout Madhya Pradesh.

India's golden performance in boxing became the defining highlight of the Games. The country created history by winning a record 10 boxing medals, including seven gold medals, the highest number of boxing golds won by any nation at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain claimed a silver medal, while Sakshi Chaudhary produced an outstanding performance that further brightened the future of Indian boxing.

Weightlifting legend Mirabai Chanu completed a remarkable hat-trick by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Meanwhile, Rishikant Singh secured silver in the men's 60 kg category, becoming the first Indian to reach the podium in the able-bodied division. In judo, Asmita Dey became India's first-ever Commonwealth champion in the sport, while Harsh Singh also etched his name into history with a medal-winning performance.

India's young stars also scaled new heights in athletics. Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games. Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian to win a medal in the decathlon, while Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who had missed the Birmingham 2022 Games due to injury, marked a memorable return by winning the silver medal in the men's javelin throw, once again delighting millions of sports enthusiasts.

India also produced its finest-ever performance in para-sports at the Commonwealth Games, winning seven medals, including three gold, two silver and three bronze. Six of these medals came in para-athletics, ending a 20-year wait for Indian athletes to reach the Commonwealth Games para-athletics podium. Indian para-athletes also achieved multiple double-podium finishes, underlining their extraordinary talent and resilience on the global stage.

Following the 2026 edition, India's overall Commonwealth Games medal tally has risen to 603 medals across 19 appearances, making the country the fourth most successful nation in the history of the Games, behind only Australia, England and Canada.

These are India's true Gen Z champions who have elevated the nation's stature before the world. Today's Gen Z is not merely the future, it is the nation's greatest strength in the present. Guided by hard work, discipline, technological excellence and an unwavering sense of national pride, this generation continues to raise the Indian Tricolour with distinction on every international stage. The commitment of every athlete, coach and support staff member serves as an enduring source of inspiration for millions of Indians.

The world's attention now turns to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which India will host. The centenary edition of the Games will be far more than an international sporting spectacle. It will offer India a historic opportunity to present its rich cultural heritage, organisational capability, modern infrastructure and growing sporting excellence before a global audience, further strengthening its position as an emerging leader in world sport.
