New Delhi, 04 August (H.S.): India's top air rifle shooter and former world No. 1 Elavenil Valarivan has opened up about the challenges she faced in her career, her comeback from injuries, and her future goals.
The 26-year-old shooter, who recently participated in the ISSF World Cup 2026 in Hangzhou, said in an official statement that consistent practice, support from her family, and her passion for the sport helped her overcome difficult phases in her career.
A participant at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Elavenil has been among the world's leading shooters in the women's 10m air rifle event. She has won multiple gold medals at prestigious competitions, including the ISSF World Cup, ISSF World Cup Final, ISSF Junior World Cup, and Asian Shooting Championships.
Recalling the beginning of her career, Elavenil said, There was no athlete in my family, but sports were always encouraged at home. Before taking up shooting, I played several sports, including athletics, judo, badminton, handball, and kabaddi. Shooting happened by chance, and I did not realise when it became my profession.
She also spoke about facing social stereotypes during the early stages of her journey. Elavenil said, People used to ask why a girl was carrying a gun. But for me, the most important things were my parents' belief in me and my own confidence. Criticism will always exist, but I never allowed it to decide my path.
Elavenil revealed that the biggest challenges of her career came not from competitions but from serious injuries. She said, In 2017, due to a severe knee injury, I could not even complete five shots without stopping. Later, in 2022, I suffered disc problems in my neck and lower back. Many times, I felt that perhaps I would not be able to continue shooting.
She added, What supported me the most was showing up for practice every day. Even if I could practise for only an hour before going for rehabilitation, I wanted to remain connected with the sport. My love for shooting helped me overcome the toughest phases of my career.
Elavenil also acknowledged the role of the Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation and Gun For Glory Academy in her development as a shooter. She said, In 2014, through an initiative by the Gujarat government, I joined the Gun For Glory Academy. Since then, I have been working continuously with coach Neha Chavan, while Gagan Narang has always been my mentor. Together, we have worked on improving every aspect of my game.
Speaking about her preparations for the upcoming Asian Games, Elavenil said, I am not thinking too far ahead. My coach and I are focusing on improving small aspects of my game every day. The plan for the entire season is ready, but for now, our goal is to become better than yesterday every single day.
Currently, Elavenil is training at the Gun For Glory Academy under the guidance of coach Neha Chavan and mentorship of Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang. She remains focused on winning medals for India in upcoming international competitions.
