Muscat/Tehran/Washington, 04 August (H.S.): Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, which have persisted since February 28 this year, continue to unsettle the international community. The ongoing confrontation involving the United States and Iran has had far-reaching implications across the Middle East (West Asia). As Iran and Oman continue negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, a fresh attack on a cargo vessel near Oman has raised fears that diplomatic efforts could face renewed obstacles. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran has a final opportunity to accept Washington's conditions, while Tehran has asserted that it is unfazed by the threat and that its armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any military action.

According to reports, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Operations Centre said a cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile near Oman. In an update posted on X, the UKMTO stated that the incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres) northeast of Khasab, Oman. Authorities are investigating the attack, while vessels operating in the area have been advised to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.

Iran has, for the first time, publicly confirmed that negotiations with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz are making progress. However, Tehran denied claims that it is engaged in direct talks with the United States. Regional mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, are reportedly working behind the scenes to help restore stability in the strategically vital waterway.

Iran's Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that discussions with Oman are focused on establishing a temporary maritime corridor for commercial shipping. If the negotiations succeed, the proposed arrangement would integrate Iranian and Omani shipping routes within the Strait. Mediators believe such an agreement could serve as an important confidence-building measure between Iran and the United States.

Amid the ongoing diplomatic efforts, Iran reiterated that it is not intimidated by American warnings and maintains full military readiness. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that it is prepared to respond decisively to any threat against the country.

In response, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces remain fully prepared to safeguard commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite ongoing peace initiatives, President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had prepared plans for a major military strike against Iran but decided to postpone the operation.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump said the planned strike would have been significantly larger than previous military actions taken since February 28. He said he chose to delay the operation after appeals from Gulf nations urging restraint, adding that the attack could have resulted in thousands of deaths inside Iran.

Trump reiterated that the next course of action now depends on Iran. He warned that Tehran has one final opportunity to halt its nuclear weapons programme and alter its approach toward the Strait of Hormuz. Failure to do so, he cautioned, would result in severe consequences.
