Hooghly, 31 August (H.S.): Toto services remained suspended across several areas of the Srirampur-Uttarpara block on Monday following difficulties faced by toto drivers in operating their vehicles on GT Road under the government’s new directives.

The suspension was observed in Rishra, Srirampur, Sheoraphuli, Baidyabati, Konnagar and Uttarpara, among other areas. Several toto stands remained deserted since the morning as drivers came together to raise concerns over the new regulations and their impact on their livelihood.

According to the drivers, the new instructions regarding the operation of totos on GT Road have created uncertainty and practical difficulties. Maintaining that their livelihood is at stake, the drivers have united to seek a clear and workable arrangement for toto operations.

The suspension of services caused considerable inconvenience to daily commuters. Passengers who regularly depend on totos for short-distance travel were forced to look for alternative modes of transport.

The drivers said they are not opposed to following government regulations but want a clear, practical and sustainable solution that protects both public convenience and their livelihood.

With toto services remaining suspended in several parts of the Srirampur-Uttarpara area, attention is now focused on whether the administration and toto drivers can reach a solution to the issue soon.
