Imphal, 31 August (HS): A clash broke out in Manipur’s Kakching district on Sunday night after security forces used tear gas to disperse a large torchlight rally protesting against the proposed census.

Hundreds of villagers from Wabagai, Hiyanglam and nearby areas took part in a nearly 3-km-long march under the slogan “No NRC, No Census”. The protesters demanded that the census be held only after updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and completing the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Tension escalated near Keirak Dam when police intercepted the procession heading towards the Kakching district headquarters. Police resorted to tear gas after some protesters allegedly pelted stones.

A few protesters sustained minor injuries, while seven demonstrators, including four women, were detained. They were later released the same night.

The agitation is linked to concerns over the impact of the census on demographic balance and land rights amid the continuing ethnic situation in Manipur.----------
