Guwahati, 31 August (HS): Following the horrific road accident on National Highway 27 in Sonapur that claimed seven lives, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has ordered completion of all necessary road repair works within seven days.

NHAI officials said strict action is being taken against the contractor and supervisor responsible for the stretch. The contractor has reportedly been relieved of the work following lapses, while the side engineer has been suspended.

The action comes after the fatal accident near Tetelia under Khetri Police Station, where a Traveller bus (AS-01HC-0716) collided head-on with a goods truck (AS-07BC-4271) after crossing the divider. Seven people have so far been reported dead, while several others were injured.

According to preliminary information, a tyre of the Traveller allegedly burst after hitting a pothole, causing the vehicle to lose control and cross the divider.

NHAI has directed that the identified defects on the highway be rectified on priority and that all repair-related works be completed within seven days.----------
