New Delhi, 31 August (H.S.): India’s economy grew at a rate of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter (April-June) of the current financial year, compared with 6.9 per cent growth recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the data on Monday. According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), the economy delivered a better-than-expected performance during the quarter.

The NSO said real gross domestic product (GDP) growth stood at 7.8 per cent in the first quarter (April-June) of the current financial year 2026-27.

According to NSO data, real GDP at constant prices is estimated at Rs 81.36 lakh crore in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, compared with Rs 75.46 lakh crore in the corresponding quarter of FY 2025-26.

The data also showed that India’s fiscal deficit stood at Rs 4.5 lakh crore during the first four months of the current financial year, from April to July. This represented 26.8 per cent of the annual fiscal deficit estimate, compared with 18.2 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous year, indicating a lower deficit during the period.

Total receipts during the April-July period stood at Rs 1.31 lakh crore.
