New Delhi, 31 August (H.S.): Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has demanded action against those accused of allegedly practising untouchability and insulting Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in the name of ‘purification’ following his party rally in Uttarakhand. He questioned why an FIR was registered against Rahul Gandhi for demanding justice, while no action has so far been taken against those allegedly responsible for discriminating against Kharge.

In a post on X on Monday, Ramesh said Rahul Gandhi had raised the issue of injustice, humiliation and discrimination against Dalits during his press conference. He also highlighted the alleged incident of untouchability and humiliation carried out in the name of ‘purification’ following Kharge’s rally in Uttarakhand and demanded action against the BJP workers allegedly involved in it.

He alleged that the BJP government in Uttarakhand could not tolerate Rahul Gandhi demanding justice. This, he said, was why no action had been taken against those accused, while an FIR was registered against Rahul Gandhi the very next day. According to Ramesh, this reflected an ideology against which the Constitution drafted by Dr B.R. Ambedkar stands as the strongest barrier.

Ramesh said the developments were an attempt to divert attention from the actual issue and suppress the voice of those raising questions. He reiterated that action must be taken against those who allegedly practised untouchability and humiliated Kharge in the name of ‘purification’.

He asserted that nothing short of justice would be acceptable.
