Bankura, 30 August (H.S.): Trinamool Congress leader Rajib Ghoshal has been arrested in connection with an alleged financial fraud case involving promises of jobs. Ghoshal is described as being close to Daimond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Ghoshal was arrested from Dum Dum in Kolkata by personnel of Beliatore Police Station on Saturday and was subsequently brought to Beliatore. He was produced before a court on Sunday.

According to police sources, Ghoshal allegedly collected money from several job seekers in 2025 on the promise of providing them employment. The complainants alleged that neither were they given jobs nor was their money returned. Following the change of government in the state, the alleged victims lodged complaints against him, after which Ghoshal had reportedly been absconding.

When police took him out of the police station on Sunday to produce him before the court, BJP workers gathered outside and raised “chor-chor” slogans. Protesters also threw eggs, although none reportedly hit Ghoshal. Police subsequently increased security to control the situation.

The BJP has alleged that money collected through the alleged job fraud was also sent to senior Trinamool leaders and demanded an investigation into their alleged involvement and their arrest.

Police are investigating whether others were involved in the alleged fraud. Ghoshal’s arrest has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and BJP in Bankura.
