Purulia, 30 August (H.S.): Several passengers, including women and a child, were trapped inside a lift at Adra Railway Station in Purulia district for nearly three hours on Sunday after the lift developed a technical fault. All the passengers were eventually rescued safely.

According to reports, the lift connecting Platforms 3 and 4 suddenly stopped midway at around 7 am due to a mechanical malfunction. Several women passengers and a child were inside at the time. As the doors remained closed for a prolonged period, panic spread among those trapped inside.

After receiving information about the incident, railway officials and personnel of the Adra RPF rushed to the spot and began efforts to rescue the passengers. Senior DCM Vikas Kumar, along with other railway officials, also reached the station.

During the rescue operation, railway authorities and the Adra RPF arranged for bottles of water and biscuits to be supplied to the passengers trapped inside the lift.

After nearly three hours of sustained efforts by railway engineers and RPF personnel, the lift doors were finally opened and all the passengers were brought out safely.

One of the passengers, Jharna Das, said that she had been trapped inside the lift since around 7 am and was rescued at approximately 9:45 am. She said the initial period was extremely difficult, but receiving water provided some relief.

The incident caused considerable concern at Adra station and raised questions over the maintenance of lift services and the effectiveness of emergency response mechanisms. Passengers questioned why a lift meant to facilitate safe movement at a major railway station remained out of service for such a long period during an emergency.
